I have recently discovered a coffee shop in my town that offers the same variety of coffee as it does of tea. They actually call themselves a “coffee, tea and chocolate” shop. I did not discover this place as much as I was introduced to it by my very trendy friends who have begun replacing coffee for tea.
I am too Colombian to simply give up coffee. I am pretty sure I have been drinking it since an age that most Americans would find unorthodox. But the idea of drinking a little less coffee for a little more tea seems like a good one, for this is the only true unhealthy habit that I, as well as many other college students, seem to have.
When I was looking for the benefits of tea, I ran into this scholarship contest from the Tea Council of the USA. It’s called the Calm-A-Sutra of Tea, where students submit a two-minute video to educate about the health benefits of black, green, oolong and white tea for the chance to win a $20,000 scholarship.
John Ford, a student at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, won the competition this year with his short film, “Interrogation,” where a couple of detectives accuse a cup of tea of being too healthy.
I laughed a lot watching this, and made me feel like this is a trend I could easily follow. I found this chart that proved to be useful in my new endeavor to figure out tea. And I also realized that there are more and more local places in my community that have started putting a greater emphasis on it.
So go ahead, try it. I am going to try to limit my coffee intake to two cups a day (trust me, that’s a challenge) and drinking teathe rest of the day. I will be happy to let you know how this turns out.
