How much talking is too much talking?

For the first time in my life I am living with friends. Until now, it’s been good. My roommates and I share the same type of life, habits and disciplines, so we haven’t had any problems. There is one factor though, that has started me thinking. We talk, and we do it constantly. We do it as we eat, as we cook, as we study and as we get ready to go out. It was then when I started thinking… how much talking is too much talking?

I found this article in the NYTimes that analyzes this same point. Girl talk is usually benign but it can easily lead to dwelling on problems. Opening up to your friends about an issue and it is out of the box. They will start sharing their opinions with you, and by over discussing it’s likely it blow out of proportion. If you all get together and speak about the stupidity of men, and you do it often enough, the negativity will engrave in your mind.  The same way that affirmations work to make us perform better in everyday tasks, negative thoughts start drilling themselves into out heads until we make them a reality.

Even though the article focuses on teenagers, I feel like it certainly still applies to our demographic.

The soultion? FInd alone time. It is necessary that you do certain things on your own, even though it is convenient to have your roommates with you. I try to exercise by myself and study outside the house. Reading is essential, since you can’t really do that with company as opposed to watching a movie or television.

Guys, I am afraid in general this post doesn’t apply to you, even though I have witnessed more than one case of the same phenomenon. Think about it: Too much guy time lately?
